Dr. Bhagat is a nationally recognized expert on lawsuits concerning:
  • Damages in securities class action litigation,  
  • Governance aspects of the subprime crisis,  
  • Valuation of private corporations,  
  • Event studies,  
  • Corporate governance and executive compensation.  
Dr. Bhagat is a Professor of Finance at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has worked previously at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Princeton University, and University of Chicago. He has an MBA from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington.  
 
Dr. Bhagat has testified in court, written expert affidavits, and been deposed by opposing attorneys. Dr. Bhagat serves as consultant to various corporate and legal clients on:  
  • Statistics: event studies; descriptive and inferential statistics; multivariate methods including regression, econometrics.  
  • Bankruptcy litigation: fraudulent conveyance, and related actions: solvency; damages; valuation; loss causation.  
  • Employment disputes: damages in contract dispute; lost earnings.  
  • Class actions: statistical analysis.  
  • Breach of duty: loss causation, event studies, mitigation, valuation, damages.  
  • Insurance and product liability: sampling and statistical analysis of claims data; loss causation and damages in business interruption claim.  
  • Intellectual property: lost sales and profits, business trends; reasonable royalty.  
  • Securities and white-collar crime: loss causation; value relevance; market efficiency; damages; event studies.  
Dr. Bhagat has served as board member of:  
  • Integra Ventures, a venture-capital company;  
  • The K-Group, an internet-based next-generation business solutions company;
  • OptTek, a leading provider of optimization software; and  
  • National Association of Corporate Directors - Colorado Chapter.  
He has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Research, and Journal of Corporate Finance. He has advised U.S. government agencies and Fortune 500 companies on corporate governance and finance issues. His work is regularly cited in the popular and financial media such as the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Economist, New York Times.
