William J. Ries
Forensic Document Examiner
 
Services include the identification of handwriting, typewriting, ink, paper, writing instruments and relationships of documents. Other problems are the decipherment of obscure, deleted or damaged parts of documents, altered documents, etc. The work often includes a study of the information carried by a document for discovery of evidence of spuriousness, identification of persons, or to show significant relationships.
 
Mr. Ries began his career as a Forensic Document Examiner with the Philadelphia Police Department Crime Laboratory, Document Unit, in
1975 until 1982 when he transferred to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office as the head of the Technical Services Unit, responsible for the Forensic Document examinations and the supervision of the Photographic Laboratory and Graphic Arts section. Mr. Ries retired from the City of Philadelphia in September, 1988 and joined the firm of Forensic Consultants as a staff examiner until his appointment in March, 1990 to the State of Ohio, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Laboratory, as one of three Document Examiners for the state of Ohio, Attorney General's office. Mr. Ries continued as a consultant with Forensic Consultants. In June 1991,
Mr. Ries returned to Forensic Consultants as a staff examiner.
 
Mr. Ries has testified as an expert witness in the field of questioned documents over five hundred fifty times in courts of record. His appearances and testimony include:
 
United States Federal Courts.
Courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and New York.
American Arbitration Association.
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Pennsylvania Workmen Compensation Hearings.
Numerous civil proceedings and depositions involving wills, contracts, employment hearings, etc.
